Four studies in muslin

The pattern

It begins as a watercolour.

Every colourway starts on paper in the studio: a fig branch, a cornflower head, a snowberry stem, painted by hand and named for the plant.

The cloth

Printed on 100% cotton muslin.

The painting is transferred to a crinkled double-gauze muslin that is light, breathable and softer with every wash.

The child

Wrapped around a new life.

A swaddle, a feeding cover, a pram layer, a playmat. From swaddle to story, from moment to memory.

Painted at the kitchen table, on the edge of the Port Hills

Lauren Buchanan is a painter and textile designer working from a small studio in Christchurch. The patterns are painted on paper first, scanned once, and printed in small runs. Nothing is drawn on a screen.

Notes on the cloth

Cloth
100% cotton double-gauze muslin, about 110 gsm. Lightweight, breathable, and softer with every wash.
Pattern
Every print begins as a watercolour painting in the Christchurch studio, inspired by nature, family and form.
Use
Swaddling, a feeding cover, a layer in the pram, an extra blanket for naps. The playmat is padded for the floor.
Care
Machine wash up to 40°C with like colours. Air dry. Muslin crinkles by design, so skip the iron.
Delivery
Tracked NZ post, 2 to 5 working days. Free over $120. Or collect from the studio in Christchurch.
